Impressionism which began in France involved light spontaneous manner of painting with lesser emphasis on details. It had its roots in the previous movement of realism. Impressionism is probably the most well known Art movement the world over with artists as famous as Pierre-Auguste Renoir,

Claude Monet, Edouard Manet, Degas, Mary Cassatt among others. An offshoot of the movement known as post-impressionism involved the use of the impressionist style but varied subjects. Artists categorized under this style include Paul Gauguin, Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Cezanne.

Jamini Roy: Bengal School impressionism

  Impressionism as a genre of art had made made immense impact on the art of the Bengal School Artists. Influence of the impressionist school can be seen in the works of many  of them  like Abanindranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose and Jamini Roy. Contempiorary Artists outside bengal like Chugtai also shows works of impressionist nature. Later day artists like Akbar Padamsee and Jehangir Sabbavala also had important impressionistsic phases in their careers.
