Started formally by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque in the early twentieth century, inspired by the works of Cezanne, Matisse and tribal art of Africa, cubism essentially involved analytically breaking any object of study into fragments and painting them separately trying thus to show the object from various directions

Though this was the objective of cubism initially, it later took different courses in the hands of various artists. Along with Fauvism, Cubism is also considered as the begining of Abstraction in European Art. Cubism has inspired an entire generation of artists and many of the later day movements like Futurism and Expressionism

Gaganendranath Tagore: Indian Cubist

In India the cubist mode of art had inspired some the Bengal school artists like Gagnendranath Tagore, Abanindranath Tagore, and the artists of the Progressive Artists’ Group like FN Souza, Tyeb Mehta, and others. Even today one can see the influence of cubist style in the works of some of the more contemporary artists..
