Eroticism had been an important part of art all through human history. In the Art of ancient Greece one sees very detailed study of nudes in erotic posture. In ancient Rome, Napoli, and Catalonia, ancient sculptures show erotic imagery and some of these were used even as state symbols.

Eroticism has also affected almost all major European Art movements. Renoir was known for his buxom women images and Toulouse Lautrec’s best works consisted of painting brothel girls in erotic postures. Picasso had gone to the extent of showing kinky fantastic scenes painted with the deliberate attempt to shock the viewers.

Pablo Picasso's later work: bizzare sexual imagery

Paul cadmus: gay imagery

The last half of 20th century saw the emergence of three major Art styles- Surrealism, Magic realism and Pseudo-realism. While surrealism often depicted the bizarre sexual fantasies magic-realists like  Paul Cadmus, brought into fine art overt homosexual imagery

Eroticism had been a very important part of Indian Art in ancient India. Temple wall relief at Khajuraho and Konark in Orissa show explicit sexual postures. In the Mughal period too one sees murals and miniatures depicting mating couples. In the art of Bengal school artists, semi-naked women in flowing dresses have been painted in abundance

Francis Newton Souza: Modern Indian erotic art

However among the modern artists of India, eroticism as subject of art was shown best by FN Souza who had distorted male and female figures into fantasy imageries. Other artists of recent times who are known for depiction of eroticism in Art are Laxma Goud and Bhupen Khakar.
